A BAMBOO-ROOT STANDING FIGURE OF LIU HAI WITH THE GOLDEN TOAD, BEARING A SANSONG MARK 尺寸:H:13cm 竹根雕劉海立像。 A bamboo-root standing figure of Liu Hai. He bares his chest and belly, laughing broadly, one foot on a lingzhi-shaped base, one hand holding a cash coin and the other the string; a three-legged toad crouches on the rock at his feet. The drapery is natural and the face lively; the rock base bears the incised mark Song. The bamboo skin is red-brown and lustrous. Liu Haichan is one of the five patriarchs of the Quanzhen school; named Cao, a Five Dynasties official, he is said to have received alchemical teachings from Lü Dongbin and retired to Mount Zhongnan. Popular tradition turned him into the wealth-bringing Liu Hai playing with the toad, landing step by step on coins. The three-legged toad is a mythic creature distinct from the ordinary frog. Qing bamboo and boxwood Liu Hai figures, holding strings of cash and standing over the toad, adorned shops and studies.
