A BOXWOOD CARVING OF THE GOD OF LONGEVITY WITH BOY AND CRANE 尺寸:H:12cm 黃楊木雕。 A boxwood carving of the God of Longevity standing: domed brow, long beard, holding a dove-head staff in his left hand and a ruyi in his right, a boy attendant at his side and a crane beside him, all on a cloud base. The golden wood is warmly patinated, the carving rounded and lively. Shouxing, the Old Man of the South Pole, is the deity of birthdays, recognisable by his high brow, long beard and dove staff. The dove staff recalls Han dynasty grants of honour to the aged; the boy, crane and clouds all add to the auspicious birthday message. Qing birthday gifts commonly included such figures for the central hall, praising crane-and-pine longevity.
