A PAIR OF QING ZITAN CABINETS WITH OPENWORK CLOUD-AND-BAT DOORS A pair of small zitan cabinets with pair doors, each door panel pierced in openwork with bats soaring among auspicious clouds. The top has a narrow moulded edge, the aprons and square straight legs are unadorned, and bronze clasps, pulls and lock-plates are mounted. The wood is of a lustrous purple with fine grain and warm patina. Zitan is a subtropical evergreen with purple, close-grained, dense wood that sinks in water; it ranks first among hardwoods of the Ming and Qing. Imperial Qing zitan furniture uses square members and restrained mouldings. The pierced cloud-and-bat doors pun on fu, bat, fortune, amid continuous clouds, blessing unbroken luck. Such small cabinets stood in the studio holding brushes, ink, seals and curios; a pair flanked the study symmetrically.
