英文品名:AN EARLY QING ZITAN BUDDHIST SHRINE 尺寸:L:52cm;W:33cm;H:52cm 紫檀木製。 An early Qing zitan wood Buddhist shrine in an open cabinet form, with an overhanging top and three lattice openwork panels above, carved in double-coin openwork with pendent spandrels. The niche is deep, with a low offering platform flanked by two small posts fitted with carved aprons. The broad molded base rests firmly on the ground. The wood is left largely plain, defined by simple line moldings, in a deep, mellow patina. The shrine, or fo kan, is a small cabinet for enshrining a Buddha image or ancestral tablet in the home. Qing households, Manchu and Han alike, placed it on the eastern wall of the main hall and worshipped there with morning incense. This open form has pierced upper panels for ventilation, a low platform inside to hold the image, and could be hung with a curtain. The unadorned dark zitan was chosen for solemn quiet; the early Qing preference for austerity contrasts with the heavily carved shrines of the later Qianlong period.
