A ZITAN RUYI SCEPTRE SET WITH JADEITE, THE REVERSE INSCRIBED WITH GUOTAI MIN'AN AND AN IMPERIAL POEM, BEARING A SANXITANG HALL SEAL, QING DYNASTY This zitan ruyi sceptre is carved with scrolling vine patterns and mounted at the head, centre, and terminal with jadeite plaques carved with floral and landscape motifs. The reverse bears a central cartouche with the incised characters Guotai Min'an; above and below it are inscribed an imperial poem—'The assembled subjects who greet the imperial progress are still many; under the rain they once had no straw cloak or hat. Their love and reverence is truly as a child for a father; how could one omit care and protection?'—and three seals: a gourd-shaped Sanxitang seal, a square Wanji Yuxia seal, and a further long rectangular seal in nine-fold seal script. The jadeite displays a vivid green hue against the dark zitan. The ruyi sceptre evolved from a back-scratcher, then became a prop held in pure-talk and sutra lectures, and by the Ming-Qing a display and gift object at court. Its name means as you wish; its head in cloud or lingzhi form evokes the longevity fungus. On New Year, imperial birthdays and weddings, princes and ministers offered ruyi to wish all as you desire. Qing examples were usually of zitan or wood set with jade, jadeite or coral, plaques at head, centre and tail, with imperial poems incised on the reverse.
