A PAIR OF SMALL GOLDEN-THREAD NANMU CABINETS CARVED WITH DRAGONS, QING DYNASTY This matched pair of small golden-thread nanmu cabinets features upper doors with openwork longevity-character lattice and lower doors deeply carved with dragon-in-clouds relief. Each cabinet has two doors opening to an interior shelf and two small drawers, the back panel incised with an imperial Qianlong poem and seals. The warm golden wood has a fine silky texture. The pair survives in good condition as elegant Qing scholar's studio furniture. Small cabinets (jia'ge or kang gui) were common Qing scholar's studio storage. Openwork longevity-lattice upper doors let air circulate, while relief-carved lower doors hid drawers for seals, seal albums, ink and letter paper. Displayed in pairs flanking a desk or by a bed, they were both functional and decorative. The warm golden nanmu, sparingly carved, suits the plain elegance of Ming-derived taste.
