A ZITAN CABINET CARVED WITH SCROLLING PEONY, QING DYNASTY This square-cornered zitan cabinet has two upper and two lower doors, all relief-carved with scrolling peony (xifanlian), the leaves and flowers lush and deeply cut. It has a shaped apron and straight square legs, with brass hinges, mounts and lock plate. The wood is dark purple-black with a lustrous patina. It is a Qing zitan studio cabinet. The scrolling peony (xifanlian) or baoxiang flower came from Persia via the Silk Road; from Sui-Tang it merged with Chinese scrolling grass to become the commonest border on Ming-Qing furniture, porcelain and silk. The flower resembles a peony, its petals curling, branches interminable, symbolizing endless wealth. Qing zitan cabinets are often fully carved with this motif, quite unlike the plainness of Ming style.
