A LARGE ZITAN BRUSH POT CARVED WITH DRAGONS AMONG WAVES AND CLOUDS, QING DYNASTY This exceptionally large zitan brush pot is deeply carved all over with five dragons pursuing pearls among surging waves and swirling clouds. The dragons are powerfully rendered with detailed scales, manes, and claws, and the wave patterns are richly layered. The dense dark wood has a heavy ancient patina, making this a monumental example of Qing zitan carving. The dragon is chief of the Four Spiritual Creatures; the Shuowen describes it as able to be dark or bright, fine or huge, short or long, ascending at spring and diving at autumn. From Tang-Song, three- and four-claw dragons settled into a five-claw form reserved for the emperor; four-claw dragons became mang, granted to high ministers. Dragons are always paired with clouds, waves and pearls—clouds follow the dragon. Five dragons pursuing a pearl amid waves evoke peace and timely rain.
