A ZITAN BRUSHPOT INCISED WITH A 'PLAYING THE QIN, VIEWING THE WATERFALL' LANDSCAPE, QING DYNASTY This brushpot is hollowed from a single piece of zitan wood in a straight cylindrical form, with narrow rim and foot. The body is incised with a landscape: tall pines over a ravine, a distant waterfall, a scholar playing the qin beneath the trees, a path and bridge half-seen. The incised lines are lightly filled in pale tone against the dark zitan ground. Along the upper rim is incised the running-script title 'Playing the qin, viewing the waterfall'; on the left vertical columns read 'Spring day, Jiachen year, painted at Cold Mountain', below a square seal-script seal (the signature cannot be fully read). The wood is fine and calm, with hidden ox-hair grain and a lustrous patina. Zitan, dense and heavy, purple-black with fine ox-hair grain, was the premier wood for Ming-Qing furniture and scholar's wares. Incised brushpots used the knife as a brush, carving rocks and trees without heavy colour, recalling the spare ink language of Song-Yuan landscape painting. Zitan brushpots flourished in the Qing; masters such as Wu Zhifan and Zhu Sansong excelled at shallow incised work, a small object revealing the literati love of landscape.
