A BOXWOOD ROOT-FORM BRUSH POT CARVED THROUGH WITH PINES AND CRANES, ON A HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:D:17.5cm;H:20cm 黃楊木隨形樹瘤筆筒。 A boxwood root-form brush pot. Following the natural hollows of a root, the whole surface is openly and deeply carved with pines and cranes: gnarled trunks, layered pine needles, and a red-crowned crane standing among rocks and water at the root, beak raised. The rim and base follow the natural contours; it is fitted with a hardwood stand with ruyi feet. The wood is of a warm yellow, finely grained. Pines and cranes denote long life. The pine, evergreen through winter, is praised in the Analects as the last tree to fade in the cold; the crane is an immortal bird and attendant on the God of Longevity. Birthday pictures of pines and cranes thus wish long years. Boxwood grows very slowly and is dense, fine and yellow, used since the Ming-Qing for small carvings and brush pots. The openwork root carving here follows the Jiading bamboo-carving manner.
