AN EARLY QING ZITAN BRUSH POT WITH INCISED CABBAGE AND POEM, SIGNED "YUNCHA SHANREN" 尺寸:D:14.5cm;H:14.5cm 紫檀木雕。 A zitan brush pot of cylindrical form with a slightly everted rim and flat base. One side is carved in low relief with two cabbage plants, leaves curling naturally, veins finely incised, with grassy ground beneath; the other side bears incised running-script calligraphy ending in the signature Yuncha shanren and a square seal. The wood is a deep purple-brown with an even patina. An early Qing scholar's desk object. Brush pots stand on the desk to hold writing brushes. Zitan, dense and dark, has been a preferred wood for the scholar's desk since the Ming. The cabbage (baicai) is a visual pun for a hundred wealth, carrying an auspicious meaning. Incised carving works like brush calligraphy on plain wood, the grooves darkened to render text and painting. Qing scholar's carvings commonly paired poetry with fruit and flower subjects for both use and contemplation.
