A BAMBOO BRUSH POT CARVED WITH SCHOLAR DISCOURSE UNDER PINES, QING DYNASTY This old bamboo-root brush pot is openwork and relief-carved with scholars discoursing under pines: gnarled pine branches arch overhead, scholars sit teaching below, a boy attends with scrolls, distant hills and nearby rocks layered. Pine needles and bark are minute, the drapery flowing. The rim and base are lined with zitan. The bamboo is brown-red and lustrous. It is a Qing bamboo brush pot. Discourse under pines evokes the poem 'I asked under the pine; the boy said the master had gone for herbs' and the white-deer grove lectures. Scholars teaching beneath pines symbolize reclusion and the dignity of teaching. Ming-Qing bamboo brush pots often took this subject—gnarled pines and three scholars teaching, playing chess or listening to the qin. Old bamboo roots are large and thick-walled, ideal for openwork, mellowing to red-brown with handling.
