A QING BAMBOO BRUSH POT CARVED IN DEEP RELIEF AND OPENWORK WITH LANDSCAPE AND FIGURES 尺寸:D:14.5cm;H:17cm 竹雕。 A bamboo brush pot of cylindrical form, the rim and foot bound with dark hardwood. The exterior is carved in deep relief and openwork as a continuous landscape: twisting pines, pavilions and figures at rest and at leisure, attended by boys. Above are incised the characters fu ju, and among the rocks a cyclical date bingyin with a square seal. The bamboo is a jujube red with rich layered carving. A Qing bamboo scholar's object. Jiading bamboo carving began in the Ming, associated with masters such as Zhu He. The method uses mature bamboo, removing the green skin and carving deep relief and openwork to render garden figures layer by layer. In deep carving the bamboo wall is cut through three or four levels so figures and pines stand proud of the ground, with a poetic inscription at the top. Qing brush pots often carried continuous landscapes around the whole wall, so that turning the pot felt like walking through a painting. Here the pine needles and drapery follow the Jiading manner.
