A ZITAN TABLE SCREEN WITH HARDSTONE INLAY OF BOYS AT PLAY, QING DYNASTY This zitan table screen features a front panel inlaid with hardstones depicting boys at play: jade, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, and agate form the figures of children running and playing among bamboo, rocks, banana leaves, and railings. The reverse is a zitan panel carved in low relief with a related scene. The stand has openwork scroll brackets and ruyi feet, showcasing fine Qing mixed-media inlay. Mixed hardstone inlay (baibaoqian), tradition linked with the Ming carver Zhou Zhu, uses a zitan or huanghuali ground routed with channels into which pieces of jade, jadeite, lapis, agate, ivory, mother-of-pearl and soapstone are cut to fit, outlined with fine metal wire and ground flush. Each stone is chosen for its natural colour—jade leaves, rose-quartz petals, lapis rocks—so the panel reads like a painting. The Qing court favoured this technique on table screens, cabinets and hanging panels.
