A ZITAN COVERED BOX CARVED WITH DRAGONS AMONG CLOUDS, ON A STAND, QING DYNASTY This square zitan covered box is carved from dense dark zitan. The lid and all sides are deeply relief-carved with dragons pursuing a pearl among swirling clouds, their scales meticulously rendered. Brass corner protectors reinforce the corners. It rests on a separate zitan stand with openwork ruyi-cloud aprons. The wood has a deep, lustrous patina, exemplifying refined Qing imperial hardwood craftsmanship. The dragon-with-pearl motif is of ancient origin. The pearl is read as a flaming pearl, a dragon-pearl, or the sun, moon or elixir. Dragons, lords of scaly creatures, raise clouds and rain; a dragon sporting among clouds symbolizes the harmony of yin and yang. From the Tang-Song onward, twin, five- and nine-dragon designs decorated palaces, dress, porcelain and lacquer, with five-clawed dragons reserved for the emperor. The coiling dragons among clouds on this box continue that court tradition.
