A ZITAN COVERED BOX CARVED IN IMITATION OF BAMBOO JOINTS, INSCRIBED WITH GU BAI TANG, QING DYNASTY This cylindrical zitan covered box is carved in imitation of bamboo joints: the lid finial takes the form of a bamboo bridge handle, while the body is moulded with vertical bamboo-stalk ridges and sprigged with delicate bamboo leaves. The dense dark wood has a rich purple-brown patina. The base is incised with the studio name 'Gu Bai Tang' and a date, with seals. The lid fits snugly, making it an elegant scholar's desk container. Seal-paste boxes were essential on the scholar's desk. Before impressing a seal, the face was dipped in cinnabar paste, which had to be kept in a porcelain, jade, bronze or wood box to prevent drying and dust. Zitan is dense, stable and does not absorb oil, making it ideal; the bamboo-joint form alludes to bamboo brings peace and rising at every joint, a literati symbol of integrity. Qing paste boxes were commonly ten to twelve centimetres across, always with a lid knop for lifting.
