A GOLDEN-THREAD NANMU OFFICIAL'S PORTABLE CHEST CARVED WITH DRAGONS, INCISED WITH AN IMPERIAL QIANLONG POEM, QING DYNASTY This golden-thread nanmu official's portable chest has two front doors carved in relief with dragon-in-clouds panels, opening to reveal five small drawers with brass hardware. The back panel is incised with an imperial Qianlong poem and the mark Yuti, with two seals. The wood shows a rich natural grain with a warm patina. It is a fine example of Qing hardwood desk furniture. The official's portable chest (guanpixiang) was a standard desk storage from the mid-Ming. It opened at the front to reveal drawers holding seal paste, seals, ink cakes, booklets, small jewels and curios. The name may mean palace chest, and such boxes were carried by officials on posting. Qing examples were usually of zitan or huanghuali with brass mounts, their doors often carved with dragons among clouds or flowers.
