A GOLDEN-THREAD NANMU COVERED BOX CARVED WITH KUI DRAGONS AND LOTUS, ON A STAND, QING DYNASTY This rectangular golden-thread nanmu covered box is carved in relief with kui-dragon and scrolling lotus patterns on the lid and sides. It rests on a separately carved zitan stand with openwork railing, ruyi-head brackets, and cabriole legs. The nanmu wood glows with golden thread-like figuring, and the ensemble represents Qing imperial woodworking. Golden-thread nanmu is a Phoebe species whose yellow wood, when cut, shows a shimmering golden figuring; it was called patterned wood in old texts. Warm and fine-grained with a quiet fragrance, old pieces deepen to golden brown. Ming palaces and furniture favoured nanmu—the halls of the Forbidden City were built of it. Less hard than zitan, it suits relief and openwork rather than deep cutting; kui-dragons amid lotus suit its mellow grain.
