A SET OF FOUR CARVED RED LACQUER WALL PANELS WITH HARDSTONE-INLAID ANTIQUES, QING DYNASTY This set of four wall panels has a wood core carved red lacquer (tihong) over a finely brocaded ground. Each panel bears an incised poem at the top and hardstone-inlaid antiques below—bronze vases, censers, hanging lanterns, potted plants and ruyi scepters arranged on carved tables, in elegant colours. The borders are carved red lacquer with flowers. The four form a coherent hall set. It is a Qing court display screen. Antiquities (bogu) scenes arrange archaic objects—bronzes, porcelains, censers, potted plants, books—into a composition, meaning erudition and refined taste. Emperor Huizong commissioned the Xuanhe Bogu tu in thirty juan recording the imperial collection, and bogu became a standard subject in painting, carving and embroidery. A four-panel bogu set on the main wall of a studio best displays scholarly taste.
