A BLACK-LACQUER GILT-DECORATED WALL PANEL WITH DRAGON ROUNDEL, QING DYNASTY This wood-cored black-lacquer wall panel has a central roundel painted in gold with a five-clawed dragon coiling among clouds and waves, its head fierce, the gold raised. Outside the roundel the ground is covered with turtle-shell brocade and flowering sprays. The frame is zitan carved with ruyi borders. The reverse is plain. It is a Qing imperial hanging panel or ruyi-edged plaque. Gold painting (miaojin, or qiangjin) mixes gold leaf or powder with glue and brushes it onto a black-lacquer ground to form clouds, dragons, flowers or figures. Black ground set off gold is the most solemn and sumptuous, used on screens behind thrones, surrounding screens and hall plaques. The dragon was imperial; a front-facing five-clawed dragon symbolized the legitimate sovereign. The roundel dragon here, against the brocade ground, is a court-level piece.
