AN AGARWOOD SEATED FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD Carved from aged agarwood, this seated bodhisattva sits in full lotus position on a double-lotus pedestal, wearing a five-leaf crown and adorned with beaded jewellery including necklace, armlets, and bracelets. The right hand raises in vitarka mudra while the left rests in the lap. The wood is a deep warm brown with a rich patina and subtle fragrance, representing Qianlong-period Buddhist wood carving. Agarwood forms when Aquilaria trees are wounded and resinous matter hardens over years, sinking in water and keeping a warm, lasting fragrance. It is hard to carve: density varies and large pieces are seldom found, so the carver must follow the natural form, cutting fine detail where the resin is dense and leaving the grain for drapery. The Qianlong Imperial Workshop had agarwood carved into Buddhas, bodhisattvas and mountain scenes, prized both for the scent on a desk and for the natural figuring of the wood.
