A QING DUAN INKSTONE CARVED WITH THE THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER AND INSCRIBED POETRY A rectangular Duan inkstone with a narrow raised rim, the grinding surface flat and the ink pool slightly deeper. The back and sides are carved in low relief with pine, bamboo and plum, the three friends of winter; branches twisted, pine needles, bamboo leaves and plum petals finely detailed. A line of regular-script poetry is incised on the side. The stone is of a lustrous purple with natural eyes and banana-white markings. Duan inkstones come from the Duan River at Zhaoqing, Guangdong, renowned since the Tang. Stone from the furnace and water pits is fine yet resilient, holds water without drying and grinds ink smoothly; Duan is ranked first among China's four famous inkstones. Carving pine, bamboo and plum on the back and sides is a common Ming-Qing literati motif: the three plants endure winter, symbolising the integrity of the gentleman. Poetry incised on the rim was usually written by the owner or copied from earlier poets, expressing intent as one grinds.
