A NATURAL-FORM DUAN INKSTONE CARVED WITH PLUM BLOSSOM, BEARING A GUANGXU YIYOU MARK This Duan inkstone follows the natural outline of the stone, with a rounded rectangular contour. The oval well is framed by a carved branch of plum blossom, its bark and petals rendered with an aged, vigorous touch. The stone is a fine purple-blue Duan, smooth and ready to grind ink. The reverse bears an incised inscription dated the Shangsi festival of the Yiyou year of the Guangxu reign, with a seal. It is a Qing scholar's old inkstone. Duan inkstones come from the Fuke Hills and Duan Stream at Zhaoqing, Guangdong; the old, Mazi and Kengzai pits yield stone that grinds ink fine without harming the brush. Makers often followed the natural form, carving plum, bamboo or water clouds at the rim—so-called heaven-made stones. Literati prized free-form stones for their unforced truth. Inscriptions on the back recording the year of making or collecting were especially valued by connoisseurs.
