A SONGHUA STONE INKSTONE CARVED WITH DRAGONS, BEARING A DAOGUANG GENGYIN MARK This rectangular Songhua-stone inkstone is fitted with a black-lacquer wood box. The rectangular well is framed by a narrow border relief-carved with two dragons at play among clouds and waves. The stone is a fine bluish-green, smooth and ready to grind. The side is incised with a running-script inscription dated the leap fourth month of the Gengyin year of Daoguang, with a seal. It is a Qing Songhua inkstone. Songhua stone comes from the Songhua River region of the Changbai Mountains in the northeast; it is warm and fine, in bluish-green or tender yellow, smooth as rendered fat. Mined from the Kangxi reign, it became the inkstone stone of the palace, prized by Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong; many examples are recorded in the Xiyan Yanpu. Gentle and ink-ready, it suits small regular script; palace examples are usually rectangular, their borders carved with dragons and clouds.
