A PAIR OF QING BRONZE LIONS 尺寸:H:43cm 銅鑄一對。 A pair of bronze lions, each seated with high curled mane, glaring eyes and open mouth. They wear ruyi-pattern collars with bells at the chest; one rests a paw on a brocade ball and the other on a cub, placed facing each other. The bodies are full and muscular, with an antique bronze patina and traces of green. Lions are not native to China; they arrived as tribute from Central and West Asia. The Hou Hanshu records that in 88 CE the Arsacid empire sent lions as tribute. Without direct observation, Chinese artists conflated them with mythic creatures such as suanni, tianlu and bixie. Buddhism promoted the lion as the Buddha's mount, the Buddha preaches like a lion's roar, and so the beast became a guardian of gates and homes. Paired bronze lions follow the male-left, female-right rule of stone lions; they stood in palaces, parks and princely mansions, cast by imperial workshops, their muscular bodies and mellow patina signalling rank.
