A PAIR OF BRONZE CRANES ON A CARVED BLACK-LACQUERED HARDWOOD STAND 尺寸:W:52cm;H:61.5cm 銅鑄。 A pair of bronze cranes mounted on a single long carved hardwood cloud-pattern stand lacquered black. One crane raises its head skyward, the other bows low, their long necks curved gracefully. The feathers are finely incised in layers with defined quill marks, the legs slender and the three-toed feet planted firmly. The bronze has a mottled greenish patina. A Qing pair of crane ornaments, symbols of longevity. The red-crowned crane was the bird of longevity in Chinese lore, the mount of immortals dwelling in the Western Queen Mother's isles. Paired cranes, often with pine, gave the auspicious phrases pine and crane prolonging life and tortoise and crane distant years. In the Forbidden City a pair of bronze cranes stood by the Hall of Supreme Harmony, symbolising an enduring dynasty; gentry houses echoed the arrangement in their reception halls.
