A HAN BRONZE LOBED MIRROR WITH SILVER-INLAID SCROLLING LOTUS 尺寸:D:19cm 銅鑄。 A bronze mirror of lobed form, with a circular boss. The reverse is inlaid in silver wire with scrolling lotus and peony, blossoms large and veins spreading over twisting vines. The silver line contrasts with the bronze ground. The rim is edged. The mirror is blackish with traces of green. Gold- and silver-inlay is made by casting or chiselling shallow channels into the bronze, hammering gold or silver wire or sheet into them, then rubbing smooth with a polishing stone until flush. Used from the Spring-and-Autumn period through the Warring States and Western Han, it decorated weapons, harnesses, belt hooks and mirrors. Mirrors were cast of copper-tin alloy, the front polished to reflect the face, the back threaded with a silk cord and kept in a mirror box or set on a stand. Beasts and clouds on the back warded off evil and welcomed good fortune; the lobed rim curves gracefully and sits pleasantly in the hand, a common form of fine bronze mirror since Han times.
