A HAN BRONZE INDENTED-SQUARE MIRROR WITH SILVER-INLAID AUSPICIOUS BEASTS 尺寸:L:18cm 銅鑄。 A bronze mirror of indented-square form, with four rounded corners and a circular boss. The reverse is inlaid in silver wire with auspicious beasts and clouds, the beasts galloping, manes curling, clouds swirling. The silver line is fine against the dark patinated ground. The mirror is blackish with traces of green. Bronze mirrors were cast of copper-tin alloy, the front polished to reflect the face, the back pierced by a boss through which a silk cord was threaded and stored in a mirror box or set on a stand. Han mirrors served daily grooming, dowry gifts and burial; the Chinese believed the bronze mirror could ward off evil, so it was placed in tombs to light the netherworld. Back decoration evolved from early Han hydra to late Western Han Four-Gods and Eastern Han narrative scenes. The indented-square form is symmetric and dignified; silver-inlaid beasts and clouds cover the back, the beasts galloping amid swirling vapours to ward off evil and welcome good fortune, the silver line bright against the dark mirror.
