A QING BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER WITH RELIEF FLORAL DESIGN AND BEAST-HEAD RING HANDLES 尺寸:D:17cm;H:20cm 銅鑄。 A bronze tripod censer. Beast-head handles with loose rings are set at the rim; the belly is densely cast in relief with chrysanthemums and peonies, petals layered and veins clear, the ground stippled with fish-roe texture. Three slightly splayed columnar feet support the vessel. The patina is of an antique bronze tone with golden highlights. Bronze censers follow the Xuande burner tradition established when, in 1428, the Xuande Emperor cast ritual vessels from Siamese bell metal; thereafter bronze censers became standard in studios and chapels. Incense was burned on a bed of warm ash over a low heat, with a cake or chip of sandalwood or aloe laid in between, so that fragrance rose without smoke, the fire-separated method prized by literati. Tripod forms sit steadily on desks; handles allow the vessel to be lifted. Dense floral relief on a stippled fish-roe ground is a common decorative treatment of the Qing.
