A HAN-STYLE BRONZE BOSHANLU (MOUNTAIN CENSER) WITH PHOENIX FINIAL 尺寸:H:14cm 青銅。 A bronze boshanlu, or mountain censer. The cover is modelled as layered peaks with piercing vents, surmounted by a small standing phoenix. The body is a rounded bowl on a tall stem and dish base. A thick green patina covers the piece, the mountain patterns archaic. The boshanlu is a Han incense burner whose lid models the legendary Bo Mountains, the fairy isles of Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou floating on the Eastern Sea, where the elixir of life was said to grow; Qin Shi Huang and Emperor Wu of Han both sent envoys across the sea in search of it. The lid is cast as layered peaks with trees and animals; when incense burns, smoke drifts from the pierced vents like clouds about the fairy isles, turning the studio into Penglai. Emperor Wu's devotion to immortals made such burners standard in palaces and noble mansions; the stemmed dish below sometimes held water to keep the fragrance soft.
