A QING BRONZE TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER WITH ELEPHANT FINIAL AND ELEPHANT HANDLES 尺寸:H:50cm 銅鑄。 A large bronze tripod censer. The pierced cover is carved with scrolling lotus, surmounted by a recumbent elephant bearing a vase, taiping youxiang. The sides have elephant-head handles with loose rings and three elephant feet. The rim is everted and the body is full. The patina is mellow antique bronze. The motif symbolises peace under heaven. Taiping youxiang, great peace has an elephant, is a visual pun: an elephant bearing a vase, ping, gives ping, peace, so the emblem reads peace under heaven. The phrase has roots in the Han shu treatises on music, and in the legend of Shun whose fields were ploughed by elephants, an omen of a golden age. On Qing court festivals, elephants bearing vases were displayed before the throne, promising tranquillity and abundance. Combining elephant handles, feet and finial on one censer is a typical Qianlong imperial auspicious programme. A large censer like this burned aloes and sandalwood in the hall, joining palace lanterns and court painting in shaping the atmosphere.
