A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FOUR-LEGGED INCENSE BURNER WITH SHOULAO AND DEER FINIAL 尺寸:H:48cm 銅鑲銀絲。 A silver-inlaid bronze rectangular incense burner, with two upright ears and four slender columnar legs. The domed lid is chased and inlaid, surmounted by a finial of the God of Longevity, bald and long-bearded, seated on a recumbent deer that looks back with spreading antlers. The body flanks are cast with elephant-head trunk handles curving upward. Silver wire is inlaid throughout with keyfret, crane and Eight Emblems motifs, over a dark aged patina. A Qing silver-inlaid bronze censer. The silver wire decoration on this censer is the gold-and-silver inlay technique known as cuo jin yin, developed in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods and flourishing under the Han. Fine channels are chased into the bronze body with a slightly rough base, then gold or silver wire is hammered into the channels, compressed and filed flush so that the metal surface appears continuous; burnishing with charcoal yields a soft patina over time. The inlaid key-fret, cranes and Eight Emblems on this burner recall Han silver-inlaid bronze, a technique long cherished in the Qing.
