A LARGE BRONZE SPHERICAL INCENSE BURNER WITH LION-DOG FINIAL 尺寸:W:42cm;H:55cm 銅鑄。 A large bronze spherical incense burner on a lobed bronze stand. The lid is surmounted by a lion-dog finial: a large crouched pup playing with a brocade ball, its mane curled. Two mythical beasts cling to the sides as handles, heads raised, forepaws gripping the vessel. The lower body is supported by three beast-mask legs on the stand. The body itself is plain with a mellow golden patina and faint incised lines. Massive and stable, a mid-Qing bronze censer. The lion entered China from the Western Regions in Han times and became the mount of Manjusri; shi also denotes the ancient titles Grand Tutor and Junior Tutor. One large lion playing with a small lion therefore puns on hereditary high office, father and son both holding rank. A lion rolling a brocade ball further echoes the wish that all things go as desired. Such large censers stood in reception halls, scented to accompany the wish for official advancement.
