A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL STANDING DUCK-FORM INCENSE BURNERS 尺寸:W:34cm;H:50cm 銅胎掐絲琺瑯。 A pair of cloisonné enamel standing duck-form incense burners. Each duck stands upright on long legs, head raised with a red crown and gilt beak, the body filled with white enamel to suggest layered feathers defined by fine copper wires. The wings lift as lids, filled in blue and black enamel. The legs are scaled in yellow and the webbed feet stand on a green enamel lotus-leaf base with upturned wavy edges and clear veins. The cloisons are fine and the enamel bright. Cloisonné enamel, commonly called jingtailan, was made by shaping thin copper wires into feather and leaf outlines on a bronze body, soldering them down, and filling the cells with coloured enamel pastes. The piece was fired repeatedly, with further paste added as the enamel sank, then ground flat and gilded at the edges. The hollow duck body held incense; smoke escaped through the wing seams, turning a decorative ornament into a working censer.
