A BRONZE TRIPOD DING CENSER WITH KEY-FRET NECK BAND, MING DYNASTY This bronze tripod ding censer has two upright rectangular handles on the rim, a key-fret band around the neck, a plain rounded body, and three straight cylindrical legs. The bronze carries a rich date-red patina with a lustrous surface. The overall form is dignified and well-proportioned, representing a classic Ming-dynasty bronze censer for the scholar's desk. Incense burners descend from ritual bronze ding of high antiquity; after the Song, scholar's studios adopted them, and incense joined tea, flowers and the refinements of the studio. The tripod-ding censer takes the form of ancient ding: upright handles, rounded body, columnar legs. It sat on a desk holding incense cakes or sticks, accompanied by paste box, tweezers and shovel. Ming bronzes were prized for their fine alloy and warm, date-red patina; ding, lian, bowl and cylindrical forms all flourished as studio furnishings.
