A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE RECTANGULAR DING CENSER WITH FOUR LEGS AND KEY-FRET BAND, BEARING A XUANDE MARK, MING DYNASTY This bronze rectangular ding censer takes the form of a square ritual ding: upright handles, a square body, and four straight columnar legs. A band of silver-inlaid key-fret decorates the neck, the silver wires set crisply into the bronze. The base bears an incised Xuande mark. The bronze has a warm date-red patina, and the form is dignified. It is a Ming silver-inlaid bronze ding censer. Gold- and silver-inlay (cuojin yin) descends from ancient bronze decoration: channels are cut in the bronze, gold or silver wire is tapped in, and the surface is ground smooth so the metal contrasts with the bronze ground. It flourished in the Warring States and Western Han; from Tang-Song, censers and vases occasionally used it for key-fret, taotie and scrollwork. The silver key-fret band on this censer sets off the warm bronze ground with crisp contrast, a dignified studio piece.
