A BRONZE BOWL-SHAPED CENSER, BEARING A XUANDE MARK, MING DYNASTY This bronze censer takes the bowl (bo) form: rounded mouth, bulbous body, flat base. It is undecorated, relying on form and patina. The bronze carries a date-red shell with a lustrous ancient patina and a heavy feel. The base is cast in relief with the six-character Xuande mark in a square. It is a Ming bronze censer suited to incense in the scholar's studio. Xuande censers are traditionally said to have been cast in 1428 from Siamese wind-milled bronze, following ancient vessel patterns recorded in the Xuanhe Bogu tu. The best tones were chestnut, date-red and cinnabar, the patina mellowing and brightening with age. The bowl (bo) form, following the monk's alms bowl, holds the incense smoke within its rounded belly, best suited to quiet evening incense in the scholar's studio.
