A BRONZE PEDESTAL CENSER CHISELLED WITH SCROLLING FLOWERS, WITH A CARVED OPENWORK WOODEN COVER, QING DYNASTY This bronze pedestal censer takes the dou form: flared mouth, bulbous body, and a splayed high foot. The neck, body and foot are all finely chiselled with scrolling peony and lotus on a brocade ground. It is fitted with a hardwood openwork domed cover, its finial shaped as a peach. The bronze has a green and mellow patina. It is a Qing altar or studio incense burner. The high-foot (dou) censer takes the form of the ancient bronze dou, originally a ritual vessel holding pickles or sauces. After Buddhism entered China, high-foot dishes and burners were used on altars for incense, flowers and lamps. In Ming-Qing times they stood before Buddha images or on desks, under an openwork wood cover that let smoke escape; peach, pomegranate or lotus-pod finials wished for blessings, sons and longevity. Chiselled-bronze high-foot censers are typically Qing.
