A BRONZE BOWL CENSER ENGRAVED WITH THE HEART SUTRA, BEARING A QIANLONG MARK, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD This bronze bowl censer has a rounded mouth and bulbous body. The exterior is engraved all over with the Heart Sutra in regular script, neatly and clearly cut, framed by beaded borders above and below. The base is cast in relief with the six-character Qianlong mark. The bronze is dark brown with a mellow patina. It is a Qing altar censer for use when chanting in the studio. The Heart Sutra, translated by Xuanzang in the Tang, is only 260 characters yet distils the Prajnaparamita teachings, declaring form is emptiness and emptiness is form; it has been chanted most widely by monks and literati. Qing emperors, the Qianlong emperor especially, were devoted to Tibetan Buddhism and often had the Heart Sutra cast on bronze censers, vases and porcelain bowls for shrines or desks, to chant beside the incense.
