A LARGE BRONZE BRUSH POT ENGRAVED WITH DAOIST IMMORTALS AND POETRY, QING DYNASTY This large, heavy cylindrical bronze brush pot is engraved all over with Daoist immortals—Xiwangmu, Dongwanggong, the Eight Immortals, Magu—seated or standing among auspicious clouds and trees, their draperies flowing. Ruyi-cloud cartouches carry the relief characters Fushou and Kangning, and running-script poems signed Dizi Lengmei xunmu jingxie. The bronze is mellow yellow-brown. It is an unusually large Qing bronze brush pot. Lengmei was a Qing court painter from Qingdao, a pupil of Gao Qizheng, active under Kangxi and made a court artist early in Qianlong. He excelled at figures and Buddhist-Daoist subjects. The wall is signed 'Respectfully engraved by disciple Lengmei', the figure and poem lines cut with the flow of brushwork in bronze. Fushou Kangning—blessings, longevity, health and peace—derives from the Five Blessings of the Book of Documents: longevity, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful end, among the commonest of auspicious phrases.
