A BRONZE WASHER-SHAPED CENSER WITH TWO CHILONG HANDLES AND THREE FEET, BEARING A XUANDE MARK, MING DYNASTY This bronze censer takes the washer form: broad everted rim, shallow body, flat base on three cloud feet. Two high-relief chilong dragons climb the rim on either side, turning back and curving their tails. The body is plain, the appeal lying in form and handles. The base is cast in relief with the six-character Xuande mark. The bronze has a warm date-red patina. It is a Ming washer-form censer. The washer censer (xishi lu) descends from ancient bronze wash basins (for ablutions), reduced to an incense burner. The broad rim and shallow body let a cake of incense smoke diffuse freely, unlike the closed bowl or ding forms. Chilong handles were the most popular on late-Ming to early-Qing censers: the winding dragons grip the rim, serving as both handle and ornament. Three-legged washers sat steadily on a desk.
