A QING BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER WITH BRIDGE EARS, BEARING A "DA MING XUANDE NIANZHI" MARK 尺寸:D:13cm;H:11cm 銅鑄。 A bronze censer with bridge ears and three feet. It has an open mouth, narrow neck, squat rounded body and three teat feet. The two ears are arched upright bridges on the rim. The body is plain, with a string moulding below the neck; the base centre bears a square seal cast in six characters, Da Ming Xuande nianzhi. The bronze is deep brown with russet splashes and a mellow patina. A Qing desk censer. Bridge-ear censers descend from the Song-dynasty Bogu illustrations and were the commonest Ming-Qing censer type. The three-footed rounded body suits table incense; the upright ears ease handling. Qing scholars kept a bronze censer in the studio, burning sandalwood or agarwood while reading or painting. The thick patina marks this as a standard Qing type.
