A QING CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL ON BRONZE LARGE ROUND BOX WITH DRAGONS AND SHOU CHARACTERS 尺寸:D:35cm;H:12cm 銅胎掐絲琺瑯。 A large round cloisonné enamel box on a bronze body. The cover is set against a lemon-yellow ground with two dragons pursuing a flaming pearl, the dragons in blue, scales finely outlined in cloisons, surrounded by clouds. The rim of the cover and the sides of the box have a turquoise ground with scrolling lotus and black shou characters, interspersed with red and white flowers. The rim and foot are gilt. A penghe, or two-handed box, held sweets, tea, jewels or face powder; its name comes from being carried with both hands. Large round boxes like this stood on hall tables, holding festival gifts or dowry jewels. Two dragons chasing a flaming pearl on the cover denotes imperial, princely or high-ministerial commission, as dragon decoration was not for private use. The rounded edges and gilt foot ring are standard for imperial cloisonné. The tight-fitting cover lifts only with a fingernail, keeping dust out.
