A WESTERN ZHOU BRONZE GUI FOOD VESSEL WITH BEAST HANDLES AND VERTICAL FLUTES ON A SQUARE BASE 尺寸:H:30cm 青銅。 A bronze gui food vessel of the Western Zhou period, with an everted rim, bulging body, paired beast handles hanging with rectangular pendants, and a square base. The neck is decorated with interrupted dragon and spiral patterns; the body is covered in vertical flutes; the base is edged with beast-mask and bird patterns. Green and brown patina cover the surface. The gui was a food vessel for millet and rice, used in conjunction with the ding cauldron under the Zhou ritual system: the Son of Heaven used nine ding and eight gui, feudal lords seven and six, great officers five and four, and lesser officers three and two, the graded ding system. Most gui have covers and handles, on ring feet or square bases; the square-base gui is an early Western Zhou monument type, seen in King Wu's Tianwang gui and the Li gui. In sacrifices the gui held grain offerings before the spirits; in feasts it served guests. The vertical flutes on the body, evoking woven mats, are a sober early Western Zhou fashion.
