A WESTERN ZHOU BRONZE SQUARE YOU WINE VESSEL WITH BEAST-MASK DESIGN AND RAM-HEAD OVERHEAD HANDLE 尺寸:H:48cm 青銅。 A square bronze you wine vessel of the Western Zhou period, with a cover and knob, flanges at each corner, and an overhead handle formed as ram heads holding loops. The body is divided into bands of taotie and bird patterns over a leiwen ground, flanges crisp. The interior base shows a diagonal lattice. The patina is a deep green. The you was a wine vessel for chang, a spiced fragrant wine infused with turmeric, used exclusively in sacrifice and banquet, one of the six zun and six yi listed in the ritual classics. The overhead handle allowed it to be lifted and poured during rites; square examples are rarer than round. Early Western Zhou square you, with flanged corners and taotie on a leiwen ground, match pieces from the Cheng-Kang reigns at Luoyang. Ram-head handles pun on yang, ram, and xiang, auspicious, as on Han tiles reading great auspiciousness. In the guan rite, chang wine was poured on the ground to invite the spirits and then drunk by the personator acting as the deity.
