A HAN BRONZE ZUN WITH BEAST-MASK DESIGN AND FLANGES 尺寸:H:30cm 青銅。 A bronze zun of the Han period, with an everted mouth, waisted neck, bulging body and tall foot, flanges at four sides. The neck is decorated with banana-leaf and beast-mask patterns; the body carries beast-mask and thunder patterns. Green and earth-yellow patina cover the surface. The taotie beast-mask, thunder pattern and flanges are all typical ornaments of ancient ritual bronzes: the taotie conveys awe and the dignity of communication with the spirits; the interlocking thunder pattern evokes the winds and rains of heaven and earth; the flanges at the four corners mark the solemn axis of the vessel as it is displayed in the ancestral hall. Han bronzes inherited the ritual tradition of the Three Dynasties, cast by the piece-mould method and chased after casting, giving the lines their archaic strength. This zun, with its beast-mask, thunder and banana-leaf bands and crisp flanges, preserves the air of ancient ritual vessels when placed in a hall or studio.
