A QING QIANLONG GILT-BRONZE AND TURQUOISE-ENAMEL DRAGON FLASK WITH HANDLES A bronze flask with flattened oval body, short cylindrical neck and a pair of lobed handles, reserved on a turquoise-enamel ground. Gilt-bronze relief covers the meander-pattern borders and, within two panels, a scaly dragon writhing amid scrolling flowers; scales, mane and leafy sprays are chased in bold relief. The foot ring is edged with lotus petals. The enamel ground sets off the gilt relief in strong contrast. This is a gilt-bronze champlevé and cloisonné enamel flask. A copper body is cast; bronze strips are soldered on at neck, belly and ears to outline the dragon and flowers in relief; the cells are filled with turquoise enamel, fired, ground, and the outlines and relief motifs finally gilded. The turquoise ground against the gilt dragon is a typical Qianlong palette. Where normal cloisonné has fine wires, the raised outlines here approach shallow relief, a style influenced by Western painted enamels and often sent as tribute from Canton under Yongzheng and Qianlong.
