A MING BRONZE YOU WINE VESSEL WITH TAOTIE MASKS AND OVERHEAD HANDLE 尺寸:H:36cm 銅鑄,卣式。 A bronze you wine vessel with a domed cover surmounted by a bud finial and a bowed overhead handle fitted through dragon-headed lugs. The neck is cast with kui dragons and the rounded body with relief taotie beast masks on a leiwen ground, flanged at the corners. The whole is fire-gilt with a bright golden patina; the casting and chasing are deep and crisp. The you was an ancient wine vessel, carried by its overhead handle during rites and poured into zun and jue cups. The taotie beast mask conveys the solemnity of communication between humans and spirits, while kui dragons and leiwen thunder-patterns wind endlessly, evoking the flow of heaven and earth. Ming bronzes inherited this ritual language; scholars kept ding, yi, zun and you on their desks to evoke the ancient age. This fire-gilt you was never a functional wine vessel but a desk or hall ornament, burned for incense, arranged with flowers or admired pure; its rounded full lines carry an ancient air.
