A QING PAINTED ENAMEL ON BRONZE EWER WITH FLORAL MEDALLIONS A painted enamel on bronze ewer with curved spout, curved handle, arched overhead bail and a domed cover set with a dark circular knob. Black and yellow grounds are reserved with floral medallions in a soft fencai manner, the sprays drawn freely; the mouth, spout, handle and bail are all gilt. The cover shows scrolling lotus on a yellow ground. The enamel layers are even and bright, set off by gilded mounts. The ewer descends from the wine ewers, or zhizi, of Tang and Song silverware and ceramics: a curved spout pours the liquid while a curved handle is held, the whole fitted with an overhead bail and cover. It was used at table to pour warmed wine or tea into cups. This example keeps the functional pouring form, spout, handle and bail, enriched with gilded mounts, serving both use and display.
