A QING PAINTED ENAMEL ON BRONZE DOUBLE-GOURD VASE WITH CRANES, PEACHES AND BATS A painted enamel on bronze double-gourd vase on a bright lemon-yellow ground, painted all over with pines, peaches, peonies and cranes in flight, interspersed with red bats. The cranes are rendered in white plumage with black and red heads, perched amid peach branches. The neck is bordered with key-fret and ruyi bands and the lower gourd with pendant plantain leaves; the mouth is gilt. Dense and refined painting expresses wishes for longevity. In Chinese tradition the crane is an emblem of longevity, said in the Huainanzi to live a thousand years, and immortals are depicted riding through the skies on cranes; the pine, evergreen through winter, likewise denotes long life. Together they form the motif of pines and cranes prolonging years. The peach alludes to the Queen Mother of the West's peaches of immortality that ripen once in three thousand years, while peony denotes wealth. Pines, peaches, cranes and bats here combine wishes for fortune and long life, a common birthday theme of the Qing.
